1. What are the top 3 area food items? Polyface Farms - renowned farm products and a smart, thoughtful approach to running an agri-business; Blue Mountain Brewery - A recent addition to the area's beer scene over in Nelson County. They stick to basics and brew them exceedingly well; T&E Meats - Up-and-coming purveyor of quality meats sustainably and humanely sourced in the Valley. Nice people too.
2. Who was the biggest inspiration for starting an independent grocery? I believe strongly in localized, energetic neighborhoods and the independent businesses that serve those residents. George Bowers Grocery is anti-big box and pro-people!
3. What do you enjoy most about being an independent grocer? The light workload and copious disposable income rank first. Secondly, and more importantly, we are pleased to able to contribute to the renewal of our neighborhood.
4. How long have you been working in Staunton? We opened in November 2008 and are expanding our assortment this year. 2010 will be a great year for us!
5. What culinary advantage does Staunton have compared to other areas in the Shenandoah Valley? The short proximity between producer and retailer/restaurant ensures freshness and flavor. Also, the access to the producers themselves ensures you "know your food" as well as the person who raised/produced/brewed/bottled it; our customers always appreciate the story behind their food.
6. What is your favorite food to eat? Anything without melamine, ammonia bathes, or non-pronounceable ingredients.
7. How would you describe what customers can expect at George Bowers Grocery? Every one of our customers can expect us to tell them exactly where their food came from, why we carry it, how to enjoy, and we always welcome their feedback.
8. Is there anything else you would like to share with us about yourself and George Bowers Grocery? We're modeled on a circa. 1890s grocery that occupied the same location. We're in the historic Newtown neighborhood and can be found online at www.GeorgeBowersGrocery.com
